Leeds Festival 2010 : Melvin Benn interview

Leeds Festival has become a highlight of the nation's cultural calendar and a much-loved spectacle of UK and global rock music.

But, says festival boss Melvin Benn, the event's soul remains as local as Leeds United, and as Northern as his own.

'Nobody talks about Leeds because of Leeds United. People talk about Leeds because of Leeds Festival.'

The words of Leeds Festival supremo Melvin Benn might not exactly be music to the ears of the Elland Road faithful, but he makes a valid point about the rise and rise of the city's showpiece rock extravaganza.

For too long considered the poor, Northern cousin of Reading, the event launched in 1999 has now found a firm place in the city's, and the country's, music calendar.
